Photo #37 – Whitewater Riverboat Crane in Arashiyama

These boats didn’t look like whitewater boats to me when I first saw them and it took a little thinking for me to figure out what was going on here.
The boats are being removed from the water and stacked so they can be trucked back to Kameoka. The crane is a critical link in the loop for efficiently lifting and stacking the boats in preparation for their return trip upstream.
The boats are routed to this crane through a small channel that skirts the south end of the Togetsukyo Bridge. The water is diverted just above the dam seen in the seine fishing photo.
